After 13 seasons of Digicel Rising Stars, one comment that has been constant, “choose better songs”.
Judges have long lamented to the show’s hopefuls to not only choose songs because they are popular, but compositions that highlight the beauty of their voice. It was no different at last weekend’s auditions in Ocho Rios, St Ann.
“A definite don’t is singing songs like Beyonce’s Listen and songs you hear on the radio over and over. When you come to a talent show and we have to listen that stuff, and every other contestant is doing the same song, it is tiresome and irritating and we will always ask you to sing something else,” said resident judge, Anthony Miller, with characteristic dry wit.
Supporting his fellow judge, Conroy Wilson said: “It’s not that these songs are bad. They are written and performed by clearly amazing artistes. The issue is that it becomes monotonous. There are millions of songs that can set persons apart from the crowd and, in any kind of audition, that is what you want to do.”
The judges have shared a few songs they are encouraging persons not to sing at the remaining auditions.
1. Sam Smith – Stay With Me, Not The Only One
2. Adele – Chasing Pavements, Rolling in the Deep, Someone Like You
3. Whitney Houston – I Will Always Love You
4. Beyonce – Listen
5. Ikaya – Fly away
6. John Legend – Ordinary People, Everybody Knows
7. Etana – I Am Not Afraid, Roots, Wrong Address, Free
Auditions will continue tomorrow at Manchester High School in Mandeville starting, at 8 a.m.
